Deer at Snowshoe

We saw many deer from the window of our rental condo during our stay at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia. The morning before we left for home, William and I took a bowl with cut bananas and walked down through the deep snow, which had been falling all night, to feed the deer. To be precise, I was feeding the deer and Will took some cute pictures. 🙂 The deer showed up near our condo several times per day hoping to get some food, mostly in the morning. Only one time we saw a male deer with antlers, the other times there were all female deer.

Central Park Carriage Ride

Our visit to NYC was a lot of fun, and we did a lot of walking, so at the end of the day, the idea of taking a carriage ride through Central Park seemed like a good choice to us. I was afraid that it would be really cold, since it was during Christmas time, but surprisingly, it was pretty comfy inside the carriage with the provided blankets. Our coachmen and guide provided a lot of information about Central Park’s attractions during the ride. According to him, horse-drawn carriages are a symbol of pre-modern life in New York City. Over time, horses remained an iconic symbol of New York City along with the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty and the street-side performers. Our guide also pointed out places in the park made famous by Hollywood films. We didn’t see the whole park. The place is huge: 843 acres filled with many interesting places to see. We just enjoyed our ride and took some pictures.

The rest of Islands of Adventure

IMG_8999Universal Islands of Adventure is one of two theme parks in the Universal area of Orlando in Florida and it is the better of the two in my opinion. My husband and I visited Halloween Horror Nights at Universal one day and the next day we spent enjoying Islands of Adventure. There are 7 different islands in the theme park and they are all completely different, which makes exploring them a whole lot of fun. Islands of Adventure and it’s sister theme park Universal Studios are both part of Universal Orlando, along with the CityWalk shopping/entertainment area and their resorts. The 7 islands are: Port of Entry, Jurassic Park, Toon Lagoon, Seuss Landing, Marvel Super Hero Island, The Lost Continent and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

1. Point of Entry Island is the actual park’s main entrance and is home to many shops and services. The featured attraction of the island is the lighthouse, which is seen by the visitors as they are approaching the island. The lighthouse icon towering 130 feet over the main entrance is inspired by the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, that was constructed in 350 B.C. and fell during an earthquake in the 14th century. Each night, this real, functioning lighthouse sends out a bright beam to lead visitors to and from the park’s gates (source: wikipedia).

Marvel Super Hero and The Lost Continent

Marvel Super Hero Island is my second favorite island after Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando’s Islands of Adventures theme park. It seemed like we were stepping through the pages of popular comic books with their Super Heroes and Villains. Here we found amazing theme sets of Spider-Man, X-Men and Captain America among others, as well as some great rides.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Our visit to Universal’s Islands of Adventures in Orlando started at the most exciting and crowded place there – The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, one of seven themed areas within the park. We spotted the lighthouse tower indicating that we are approaching the Islands of Adventures (IOA) from Universal’s City Walk.

Cancun Day 7 – Xplor Adventure Park

Xplor was the highlight of our Cancun vacation, so we left best for last. Xplor is a natural adventure park opened in July 2009. The park is situated approximately 35 miles (56km) south of the Cancun airport and occupies an area of 59 hectares, of which 8 are underground. Xplor offers 4 thrilling activities: zip lines, amphibious vehicles, underground raft adventure, and stalactite river swim.

Cancun Day 6 – Underwater Museum

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? Well, this is what scuba diving allows you to do: to breathe underwater, maintain buoyancy, propel yourself through the coral reefs and most importantly stay underwater for a prolonged period of time. On this day, Dave and I were going to visit the MUSA  – underwater museum in Cancun at the same time as learning to scuba dive for the first time with AquaWorld. It seems like we chose the right time for a dive in the warm Caribbean waters with great visibility.

Cancun Day 3 – Coba Maya Encounter Expedition (Part 1)

Early in the morning we were taken by the minivan to experience the Coba Maya Encounter Expedition tour. We were planning to arrive at the authentic Mayan village of Pac-Chen, a self sufficient community of approximately 125 people who still live in round thatch huts deep in the jungle. There’s no electricity or indoor plumbing, and the roads aren’t paved. The inhabitants, who primarily make their living farming pineapples, beans, and plantains, still pray to the gods for good crops.

The first half of the day included:

  • Rappelling into a cenote
  • Riding a zip-line
  • Canoeing
  • Lunch in the authentic Mayan village

After lunch the plan was to visit the ancestral city of Coba, an archaeological site hidden deep inside the jungle. It will be in the next post as Part 2 of Cancun Day 3 – Coba Encounter Expedition.

A Day at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center

On Sunday, during the Labor Day weekend, Dave and I spent all day zip lining and river rafting at the Harpers Ferry Adventure Center, which is 1 hour and 15 minutes away from our home. Harpers Ferry is a historic town in West Virginia. It is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet (from Wikipedia). Harpers Ferry Adventure Center, formerly Butt Tubes, is located 3 miles south east of Harpers Ferry in Purcellville, Virginia and offers a variety of outdoor activities. It is a small place, but there are picnic areas with tables, charcoal grills, and a sand volleyball court for customer’s use. A souvenir store, a small food court and changing rooms are also avaulable. Here we are at the center. It was starting to rain a little.

Skydiving is Fun!

I’ve always wanted to try skydiving and scuba diving! This summer I was able to accomplish both. This post I dedicate to my first tandem sky dive. Let’s start from the beginning. After 3.5 hour drive from Washington, DC area, Dave and I have arrived at Skydive Delmarva located at the Laurel Airport in the state of Delaware. The main reason for choosing this place for skydiving was its close proximity to the Delaware Beach Resort Areas, which is where we were planning to spend next day, Sunday.
