Morning after the storm

It was an interesting morning… With the temperature reaching 104 degrees around 3 p.m. on Friday June 29, 2012 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, a wave of violent storms swept through the Washington area on Friday evening. The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses after a day of record-setting heat (breaking a 78-year-old record high for the month of June) according to USA Today. It was very hot for the past several days in DC metro area. Today, in the morning during our ride, my husband and I saw some results of the storm. We live in Alexandria, which is not far from DC (around 15 miles) and it seems like the storm did not hit us hard, but we saw some broken trees and knocked down road signs, not to mention leaves and branches were everywhere on the usually spotless roads. Just as we arrived at the Lee RECenter, we saw a tree broken almost in half.

Unfortunately, our yoga class was cancelled and we left shortly after. Here is another broken tree on the way from the RECenter.

We decided to stop at Harris Teeter for grocery shopping, but they had some problems with power outages, so they weren’t offering anything from the refrigerated sections. The nearby bank was closed because of the power outage as well.

We headed to Safeway instead and did not have any problem there. 🙂 While driving we saw a knoked down sign on the devider.

Good thing is we found ourselves a new produce center not far from us… after 3 years living here. 🙂 It was a nice surprise. Prices there are not cheaper than in the supermarket, but produce is fresher and most of it is locally grown.

And they also have a nice selection of plants.

We bought a Celosia plant for our balcony. This plant is very pretty and it loves sun, which we have more than enough of on the balcony.

Have you ever tried Champagne mango? I have not. So we bought some to give them a try. 🙂
